mHealth revenue to hit $26 billion by 2017

A new report released from German market research firm research2guidance expects the worldwide market for mHealth apps – and their corresponding services – to hit $26 billion by the end of 2017.

The report, mHealth App Developer Economics 2014, believes the biggest potential for app developers come in the area of fitness monitoring. By the year 2017, apps the areas of remote monitoring and consultations will take over the top spot. Two thousand mobile health app publishers and experts were surveyed online for this report.

Additional findings show that traditional healthcare providers need to make the most strides in this sector, which aligns with other reports we’ve shared on this blog. Currently, only 3.4% the total number of app players come from this sector.

The responders of the survey believe however that the future holds good things for traditional healthcare, predicting that mHealth apps will achieve improved patient compliance and  reduction in readmission costs.
